Pita Break in the News!
Packaged and Prepared Foods that are Both Delicious and Nutritious Recognized at Second Annual LIVERightTM Awards.
On February 11, 2009, the Canadian Liver Foundation's 2009 LIVERightTM Awards recognized 12 packaged and prepared convenience food products as being both delicious and nutritious, at a presentation last evening at the Palais Royale. The LIVERightTM Awards connect two themes - nutrition and liver health - to raise awareness of fatty liver disease resulting from poor nutrition and sedentary lifestyles, which is now the most common type of liver disease in people living in North America.
Canadian Liver Foundation acknowledged Ozery's Pita Break with three of their top LIVERightTM Awards for 2009, encouraging healthier snacking for families:
1. Best Breakfast Item - Apple Cinnamon Breakfast Pita 2. Best Lunchbox Item - Flax Pita 3. Best Family-Friendly Item - Morning Grains Breakfast Pita
Now in its second year, more than 90 submissions were received from companies vying to be recognized for having an innovative convenience food product that is both delicious and nutritious. Submissions were evaluated in two separate judging events, one involving children and another using nutrition and food experts. "The competition was phenomenal," says Anna Withrow, manager of the LIVERightTM Awards. "We had some great submissions ranging from food industry heavyweights to small grassroots food manufacturers that literally sent a submission from their first production run."
Award categories include: Best Kid-Friendly Item; Best Breakfast Item; Best Beverage; Best Dessert; Best Side Dish; Best Vegetarian Item; Best Ethnic Item; Best Entree; Best Snack; Best Condiment: Best Lunchbox Item; and Best Family-Friendly Item. Entries are judged on taste, visual appeal and nutritional value. The 2009 judging panel includes: Christine Picheca (Online Food Editor, Canadian Living Magazine), Theresa Albert, D.H.N., R.N.C.P. (host of the popular Food Network series Just One Bite, owner of Thyme for Supper, and author of Cook Once a Week, Eat Well Every Day), Winnie Chiu (Director for the Compliments Culinary Centre at George Brown College), Steffan Howard (Head Chef, Palais Royale), Judy Scott Welden (Nutritionist/Home Economist, Television Food Pro) and Madeleine Edwards, R.D. (Nutrition by M.E.). Submissions for the Best Kid-Friendly Item were reviewed by 22 judges: Students of a grade 3/4 class at Kensington Community School.
Pita Break Chosen by Queen's School of Business as Top 50 Employers for 2009
On January 14, 2009, The Globe and Mail announced that Ozery's Pita Break has been named one of the top 50 Best Small & Medium Sized Employers in Canada in 2009. As one of only a handful of food companies included, the award is based on work environment, camaraderie with co-workers, human resource practices, and overall employee health, happiness and wellness.
Queen's School of Business and Hewitt Associates, a global human resources outsourcing and consulting firm, conducted a thorough, confidential employee survey that detailed employee perceptions and opinions on a variety of topics regarding work environment with direct comment from the company's employees. The award recognizes those companies that offer innovative employee benefits and recognition for a job well done.
"Most companies measure success by looking at the bottom line. To us, at Ozery's Pita Break, a major part of our success lies within our employees' well being. We are thrilled to be chosen by Queen's School of Business as one of the top 50 Best Small & Medium Employers in Canada for 2009," says Alon Ozery, Ozery's Pita Break founder.
"At Ozery's Pita Break, we honestly see our staff as family. We celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, awards, etc. We really value our employees' suggestions - some of our best products are results of their ideas! Together, we bake pitas, crackers and flatbreads that we are proud to serve - to our families and yours. It's our goal to create a workplace that's friendly, caring and just as healthful as the products that we bake," explains Guy Ozery, Ozery's Pita Break president. "We are honoured and proud to be included in the Best Small & Medium Employers in Canada for 2009."
Pita Break thanks all its Team Members for helping us achieve this honour!

Whole Grains are a delicious part of a healthy diet and lifestyle, and are more than just the sum of their 3 parts. Whole Grains have increased vitamins, minerals and fiber found in the bran, germ and endosperm.

Salt SOS - Nutrition Action, March 2008
Pita Break was recently written up in Nutrition Action magazine's March 2008 article "Cracking the Code: How to Find the Healthiest Crackers." Mentioning "when it comes to crackers - or any other kind of food - you can't tell salt content by taste," Nutrition Action lauded Pita Break's low-salt cracker option as "darn tasty."
With only 100mg of sodium per serving, Pita Break's Organic Whole Wheat Lavash cracker offers great taste, without a lot of salt. Plus, with fibre and organic whole grains, these crackers are definitely worthy of Nutrition Action's "Best Bites" accolades!
